Nuance Communications Inc. has unveiled Dragon Drive!, a new automotive-grade natural-language voice platform that was created specifically for the connected car. The product allows automotive manufacturers and suppliers to offer eyes-free and hands-free message dictation with direct access to content, music, and navigation, powered by speech recognition.

IMS Research has found that the world market for connected cars is to grow 650% to reach 40.5 million unit sales in 2017. According to A JD Power 2012 U.S. Automotive Emerging Technologies Study on consumer demands for in-car technology, 69% of the consumers want natural language voice activation and 68% want wireless connectivity. However, accessing all connected cars have to offer should not come at the expense of driver distraction. Handheld messaging is among the biggest manual-visual distractions.

Dragon Drive! Messaging features Nuance’s Dragon Dictation technology to deliver mobile assistant messaging experience that allows users to speak, listen and respond to text messages and emails. The Dragon Drive! platform gives automotive manufacturers directed search and natural language understanding capabilities. Drivers can find local businesses and information, get instant directions from anywhere, search and listen to songs, or get instant news from the mobile Web.

“As connectivity continues to push into the car, bringing with it a host of new services and features, the risk of driver distraction is becoming a key issue for every vehicle manufacturer,” said Jack Bergquist, Automotive Analyst, IMS Research recently acquired by IHS Inc.
