ABBYY, the provider of document recognition, capture and linguistic technologies, has announced a new release of its Mobile OCR Engine, a software development kit (SDK) for creating optical character recognition applications.

ABBYY Mobile OCR Engine allows developers of mobile apps to integrate OCR technologies which enable the conversion of images and photographs into editable and searchable text. Applications based on ABBYY OCR let users turn photographs of documents, business card, notes, and other text taken with the device camera into data that can be shared, stored, or exported to other applications. The SDK covers a large variety of operating systems including iPhone®, Windows®, Windows Mobile® Android™, Mac OS®, Symbian™, Linux®, and Mobile Linux (Moblin™).

In addition to text recognition capabilities, the software development kit now features barcode recognition technology which recognizes a wide range of 1D and 2D barcode types. When the technology is integrated into mobile devices, it enables users to extract barcodes from documents by photographing and processing them. The new version of ABBYY Mobile OCR Engine can detect hyphenation in the captured text.

The performance of ABBYY’s technology for Business Card Reading (BCR) has also been enhanced to increase the speed of language processing by up to 68 percent. The supported languages now include Polish and Estonian.
