Nuance Communications is going to expand its self-service Mobile Developer Program to China. The Dragon Mobile SDK now supports Mandarin Chinese.

The Nuance Mobile Developer Program was launched in January this year. The program enables mobile developers to add voice capabilities to their applications for iOS and Android. Developers have access to the self-service website so they can easily deploy dictation and voice search technologies found in Dragon Dictation and Dragon Search, as well as the company’s Vocalizer text-to-speech.

In the first ninety days of the Nuance Mobile Developer Program, more than 2500 developers signed. The program has managed to launch a wide variety of voice-enabled applications for iOS and Android worldwide. Some of these apps are Ask for iPhone, Dictionary.com, Siri, Price Check by Amazon, iTranslate from Sonico, SpeechTrans, AirYell from Avantar, Taskmind from Catalyst, Merriam-Webster, and more.

The Dragon Mobile software development kit (SDK) is available through the Nuance Mobile Developer Program for Apple iOS 4.0 as well as other devices running Android 2.1 and higher. The SDK now features support for Mandarin Chinese, in addition to UK and US English, European Spanish, German, European French, Japanese and Italian for dictation and search. More supported languages are expected by the end of the year. Text to speech recognition capabilities are supported for more than 35 languages.

Nuance’s Mobile Developer Program provides developers with access to prepackaged wrappers and widgets that enable them to include voice recognition into applications through the self-service website. Developers can also benefit from the website forum for additional support, code samples and documentation.

“The success of the Nuance Mobile Developer Program in just its first 90 days has proven that developers and their consumers love the ability to quickly and easily interface with application via voice,” said Michael Thompson, senior vice president and general manager, Nuance Mobile. “This latest expansion into China is very exciting and is just the beginning of what we anticipate to be a globally thriving developer and mobile app ecosystem powered by Dragon.”
