Nuance’s voice technology which is powering Ford SYNC is now available as part of the Ford SYNC AppLink software development kit. Developers are able to make a voice user interface for all smartphone applications that are developed for use by SYNC.

Ford’s SYNC AppLink software enables users to control popular smartphone applications for iOS, Android and BlackBerry via Ford SYNC hands-free, using voice control. The SYNC AppLink SDK delivers Nuance’s text to speech and voice recognition technology to help developers with their voice-enabled SYNC applications. In this way drivers will have the ability to control applications and listen to information read aloud – simply by pressing a button on the steering wheel. There any many ideas for applications powered by voice, since they can be made to dictate messages and/or read messages aloud, as well as locate different places, make reservations, search and find songs, and many more. With AppLink, drivers will have access to many Ford SYNC-enabled applications for a safer and more plesant driving experience.

“Voice has proven to be among the most intuitive and natural ways to engage with devices and automobiles, and through the Ford AppLink SDK, consumers can experience the best of both worlds,” said Arnd Weil, vice president and general manager, Nuance Automotive. “And because Nuance’s voice capabilities are tailored for the SYNC experience, AppLink developers know their apps will work seamlessly with its interface, creating an unmatched mobile experience that delivers entertainment and minimizes distractions.”
