ABBYY is participating in the final conference of the European Commission’s Improving Access to Text (IMPACT) project on 24-25 October 2011 at the British Library in London. The IMPACT consortium, which is led by the National Library of the Netherlands, Koninklijke Bibliotheek, brings together 26 European partners.

Mass digitization has spread to museums, libraries and archives. Some of the leading institutions in Europe have begun large-scale digitization projects to scan millions of pages yearly. Richard Boulderstone, Director of e-strategy and Information Systems at the British Library says, "Digitization has the potential to revolutionize research. The efficiency gains made possible by access to digital rather than physical items are huge. However, this is only the first step to making these documents accessible. Optical Character Recognition (OCR), indexing, text mining and sophisticated browser-based applications are also required to make this material easy to find, view, compare and analyse."

ABBYY plays a key role in IMPACT, providing its OCR technology as well as expertise in the recognition of old and historic fonts. During the conference ABBYY will inform about the enhancements to its recognition technology.
