UPMC and Nuance Communications, Inc., have announced a multi-year collaboration. The two companies will develop Medical Intelligence solutions to change the way patient information is understood, captured, and used. The collaboration aims to create an accurate electronic medical record (EMR), across UPMC and the healthcare industry.

The two companies have signed a 10-year agreement to develop speech recognition and clinical language understanding (CLU) technologies. These medical intelligence solutions will turn clinical data into information used to drive smarter decisions. At the moment, medical data is captured usually as unstructured free text that is difficult to analyze.

UPMC is a health enterprise with over 50,000 employees. The company partners with industry leaders including IBM, Alcatel-Lucent, and GE Healthcare. “UPMC’s deep expertise in medicine and patient care combined with Nuance’s unmatched leadership in speech and language understanding technologies has the ability to change the face of healthcare delivery,” said Paul Ricci, chairman and CEO of Nuance.  “Together, we’ve entered into a unique and powerful collaboration that will accelerate the role healthcare IT plays in making clinical data more valuable.”

The newly announced partnership between UPMC and Nuance includes a services license agreement to standardize on Nuance’s healthcare IT solutions at a variety of hospitals, imaging centers and outpatient sites. Nuance and UPMC will initially focus on CLU technology to enable clinicians to capture relevant clinical details by dictating notes for the medical record. The solutions are expected to be available through Nuance later this year.
