Parascript, LLC, an image analysis and pattern recognition technology provider, has announced that its SignatureOnline was given the award for best performance for online signature verification. The award was announced at the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR) in Barcelona, Spain, which was held July 26 – 29, 2009.

Parascript was one of the twelve participants from eight countries that represented a total of 15 online signature verification systems. SignatureOnline proved to offer the lowest Equal Error Rate (EER), at 2.85 percent (lower EER values mean higher accuracy), with the second best rate from a competitor at 8.33 percent.  These results show that the company’s signature authentication technology can help forensic handwriting experts for the formulation of the evidence strength for court proceedings.
Currently, forensic signature verification is made through visual examination by forensic handwriting experts without the help of computer-assisted methods. The participants in the conference were presented with an online signature database which contained both genuine and forged signatures, and were then asked to distinguish between the genuine and the forged ones, based only on one reference signature.
“We are very pleased with the results from the competition conducted by the Netherlands Forensic Institute and look forward to continuing to apply the benefits of our technology to forensic handwriting analysis,” said Alexander Filatov, senior vice president for Parascript. “Parascript is proud to offer products that respond to the many diverse needs in signature fraud detection.”
SignatureOnline combines several engines which analyze biometric characteristics including speed, length and sequencing of the stroke, acceleration, deceleration, pen pressure and timing. These characteristics are directly received during the act of signing, along with a technology which scrutinizes signature shape.
